What Does the Bible Say About Justice?
Justice is not a side note in Scripture—it’s central to God’s character and His commands to His people. From the Old Testament prophets to the teachings of Jesus to the final chapters of Revelation, the Bible consistently calls us to defend the poor, confront corruption, and walk humbly with God. At ASJ, we pursue justice not just as a social cause but as a spiritual requirement. This page unpacks what the Bible really says about justice—and how you can respond with bold, faith-driven action.
What are some key Bible verses about justice?
Micah 6:8, Isaiah 1:17, Amos 5:24, and Matthew 23:23 are only a few powerful examples of many. They urge believers to act justly, love mercy, and challenge systems that oppress the vulnerable.
How is biblical justice different from secular social justice?
Biblical justice is grounded in God’s righteousness and calls for transformation of both hearts and systems. It is magnetized forward toward the coming Kingdom of God, when all wrongs will be made right and Christ will be all in all. It includes prophetic truth-telling, moral accountability, interpersonal compassion, and institutional advocacy—rooted in divine authority, not cultural trends.
Why should Christians care about systemic injustice?
Because God does. Scripture shows God consistently defending the oppressed and rebuking unjust leaders. As followers of Christ, the one overturned the tables of those oppressing the poor in the Temple, we’re called to reflect God’s heart for justice—not just in word, but in action.
We strive to be brave Christians, dedicated to doing justice in Honduras and to inspiring others around the world to seek justice in their own contexts.
In Honduras
We work together with our partner organization ASJ-Honduras as they seek justice, work for peace, and lead systemic reform in Honduras.
Written by ASJ Co-Founder Kurt Ver Beek and Christian philosopher Nicholas Wolterstorff, Call for Justice draws on stories from Honduras to illustrate what it means to do justice. It provides a practical and inspiring guide to seeking justice in our everyday lives.
As a Justice Partner, you are part of a committed group of supporters who give monthly to sustain the work of justice. Justice Partners are a community of over 285 passionate justice-seekers who believe that building a more just society in Honduras is possible.
