COVID-19 vaccines are a key step for Honduras' economic and health recovery in 2021. Our team in Honduras is ready to monitor COVID-19 vaccines for fair distribution, but first Honduras needs access to the vaccine! Join us in advocating for a People's Vaccine that is accessible for Honduras and all countries.

Working for Justice

In 2020, ASJ pursued justice during the COVID-19 pandemic in Honduras. We investigated purchases of ventilators and mobile hospitals to catch corruption that hurt Hondurans’ health. Learn more about our work during COVID-19. Now as we hope that vaccines signal the end of the pandemic, we have another opportunity to work for justice.

In the U.S., 37% of people have received at least one dose (as of April 16, 2021). The promise of being able to safely hug and gather with loved ones is exciting for all of us. At the same time, Honduras has only received some 50,000 vaccines and current projections show that Honduras won’t be fully vaccinated this year. In fact, only 10% of people in developing countries like Honduras are likely to be vaccinated in the next 12 months. We should all be getting out of the pandemic together, but there is an unjust gap in who can access life-saving vaccines.

How Did We Get Here?

Mismanagement and poor communication from the Honduran government have certainly played a role in the country's low vaccine stock. But that’s not the sole reason. Last summer, wealthier countries were able to preorder more vaccines than they needed from multiple companies, meaning most developing countries couldn’t start making those deals until early 2021. In addition, U.S. contracts and international patent rules make it harder to donate or replicate COVID-19 vaccines and treatments at affordable rates. How to Stand for Justice

Our colleagues in Honduras are already working to ensure that vaccines in Honduras are distributed fairly - first to health workers and the most vulnerable. You can join our work by signing a petition that asks President Biden to commit to vaccine equity by supporting a proposal from over 100 developing nations. This proposal would temporarily waive certain patent restrictions until the end of the pandemic so that COVID-19 vaccines and treatments are affordable and accessible in Honduras and across the world. This proposal is backed by groups like the WHO, Doctors without Borders, UNAIDS, Oxfam, and Amnesty International.

By signing this petition, you join the voices of justice seekers around the world in seeking health and flourishing for all of our neighbors—in Honduras and beyond. Petition hosted by our friends at World Renew and the Office of Social Justice.

We cooked up an event for you! ASJ Co-Founder Jo Ann Van Engen and her friend Albertina showed us how to prepare a savory one-pot Honduran meal. During this 30-minute Facebook event, they cooked
arroz con pollo (rice with chicken) and talked about how you can support our COVID-19 justice work so that Honduran families can once again safely gather around the dinner table. We hope you'll sign the petition above for vaccine equity.
