How to Pray for Justice

When injustice feels overwhelming, prayer is not a last resort—it’s a powerful act of faith and resistance. At ASJ, we believe prayer fuels justice by aligning our hearts with God’s and inviting God’s strength into broken systems.
Whether you’re praying alone, with your church, or in a small group, this guide will help you pray specifically for victims of corruption, unjust leaders, public reform, and lasting peace in Honduras and beyond. Because when believers pray boldly, mountains move.
Why is prayer important in the fight for justice?
Prayer keeps our hearts soft and our eyes on God’s power rather than our limitations. It helps sustain long-term justice efforts by continuing to centering the work on God instead of ourselves. This helps us resist despair when the work becomes discouraging or overwhelming. Throughout the long tradition of Christian justice work, from the abolition of slavery to the civil rights movement, prayer has played a crucial role in centering the hearts and grounding the actions of Christian justice fighters.
What are some specific things I can pray for?
Pray for honest leaders, protection for whistleblowers, wisdom for reformers, healing for victims, and justice in government systems. You can also pray scripture like Psalm 82:3–4, Proverbs 31:8-9, or Isaiah 58:6.
Can prayer make a real difference in global justice?
Yes—prayer prepares the ground for action, fuels courage, and opens doors no strategy can. Many of ASJ’s breakthroughs have come after seasons of intense, specific prayer.
