Land and Labor Rights in Honduras: What You Should Know
In Honduras, many people work hard but still face threats to their land and livelihoods. Farmers can lose ancestral land due to corrupt registries. Workers are often exploited, underpaid, or denied basic protections.
Land and labor rights was one of the foundational areas that ASJ began our justice work in. ASJ fought for land and labor rights by offering legal support to vulnerable families, exposing injustice in public systems, and advocating for reforms that protect those most at risk. When people have secure rights, they can build real futures—without fear of losing everything.
What are the most common land rights issues in Honduras?
Land disputes are widespread due to a lack of formal documentation, overlapping claims, and corruption in the land registry system. Many rural families live on land they’ve worked for generations but don’t have official title to.
How are workers' rights violated in Honduras?
Low-wage workers, especially in security and domestic service, often face wage theft, unsafe conditions, or retaliation for speaking out. While legal protections exist, they are frequently unenforced.
How has ASJ helped defend land and labor rights?
In our early days, ASJ provided legal aid to families facing eviction or land loss and advocated for transparent land reform. We also pushed for the enforcement of labor laws and support workers in filing formal complaints when their rights are violated. This work fueled our current national reform success in justice initiatives in health, education, and security.
We strive to be brave Christians, dedicated to doing justice in Honduras and to inspiring others around the world to seek justice in their own contexts.
