About ASJ

The Founders

ASJ was born from a bold vision shared by Carlos Hernández, Kurt Ver Beek, and other Honduran friends--a vision to build a more just and compassionate Honduras. Carlos has spent over 36 years in public service, leading reforms in health, education, and security. He is recognized internationally for his work fighting against corruption and his dedication to the vulnerable. Kurt, a sociologist and justice advocate, has lived with his wife in Honduras for over 30 years, working alongside local leaders to drive meaningful change. Together, Carlos and Kurt bring a powerful blend of local commitment and global vision. Their leadership continues to inspire a movement transforming lives and systems across Honduras.

ASJ History

The history of ASJ spans more than 25 years of justice work in Honduras. From the very beginning, ASJ has been motivated by a vision to stand with the poor and the oppressed. ASJ’s journey is full of powerful stories, and we want to share them with you. So, if you're curious to learn more about ASJ’s journey on the road to justice, you can read more about it here.

Our History

A Christian Perspective

ASJ’s work is grounded in the belief that Christians are called to boldly pursue justice. This call is found throughout Scripture—from the prophets to Jesus’ teachings and the apostles’ writings. We take seriously Micah’s call “to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly” (Michah 6:8) and Isaiah’s command to “seek justice” and “correct oppression” (Isaiah 1:17). For over 25 years, ASJ has worked for justice in Honduras, and we believe this mission must extend everywhere including our own communities. Each small step contributes to God’s vision for a more just world. We imagine a future where good schools, good hospitals and safety from violence and corruption are available for every Honduran citizen.
