Why were Honduran children missing nearly half their school year?


ASJ uncovered how corruption kept classrooms empty and left students behind. Only 125 of the required 200 school days were being met. Shockingly, 26% of teachers on the payroll weren’t even teaching. Despite high spending, Honduras had the lowest test scores in Latin America. ASJ’s work sparked reform and drove transformation. Today, both school attendance and accountability are rising. For years, corruption crippled Honduras’ police force. Officers were undertrained, untrustworthy, and often linked to organized crime. With public trust at just 30%, real reform felt out of reach. Then, in 2016, ASJ leaders were asked to help lead a bold national purge. 


Result

Over 5,600 corrupt officers were removed, and thousands of well-trained recruits were brought in. This unprecedented reform is now reshaping public security in Honduras. ASJ continues to push for improvement to the justice system that will protect all citizens.

In Honduras, violence and impunity leave the poor without protection or justice. ASJ works to change that—both in vulnerable communities and at the national level. ASJ walks alongside victims and partners with police to restore trust and safety. Since 2005, ASJ has been present for victims and their families where justice has felt out of reach. ASJ also pushes for reforms in the Attorney General’s Office and the courts. Too many cases are still ignored—but they don’t have to be.

Dionisio Díaz García was a brave lawyer at ASJ, defending exploited workers in Honduras. His fight for justice won real victories, but also made powerful enemies. Despite threats to his life, Dionisio refused to back down. In 2006, while on his way to court, he was assassinated for a case he was about to win. His murder was a tragic reminder of the cost of standing up to injustice, and his legacy continues to inspire ASJ’s mission today.
